Local Girl Scouts & Boy Scouts Help The Homeless Saturday, November 11, from 9am to 4pm, at the LDS church on Skycrest, local girl scout troops will be painting beautiful murals on partitions that were built by local boy scouts. The partitions are being made for the Santa Clarita Emergency Winter Shelter. They will allow the shelter to serve more people and will help to brighten the shelter’s atmosphere. Saturday’s event is an open house. There are currently 4 troops and 15 individuals that are volunteering their time. This event is not only for Girls Scouts, but it is open to the general public. Anyone who would like to help with this project should come between the hours of 9am and 4pm, and be ready to paint. An additional painting day has been scheduled for November 25. Keirstin Fernandes is the Gold Award Girl Scout who will be leading the mural painting project. The mural painting project gives an opportunity for many Girl Scouts to create a work of public art that will have lasting value and will improve the environment within our local Emergency Winter Shelter. Fernandes said, “I took this over as my Gold Award project from Girl Scout Adult Leader, Lynda Sargent, who had started with the idea. We are so excited to have this opportunity to contribute to the homeless shelter. We hope the partitions will help to brighten the day of the people who stay there.” On November 4th, local Boy Scouts constructed the dividers using donated materials. Eagle Scout, Ryan Day led the project team that constructed the dividers and painted them with primer. According to Ryan Day, “This is such a great project. We are very happy to be able to help fill this need in the community.” Anyone who would like to participate should come to the LDS church on Skycrest between the hours of 9am and 4pm. The Santa Clarita Emergency Winter Shelter (EWS) assists people with the help they need to improve their individual or family circumstances. The SCCDC has operated the EWS for the past nine years. Open from approximately Dec.1 through March 15 each year, the EWS provides shelter, food, clothing, medical and mental services as well as other assistance and referrals to its clients. Additionally, because minors are not permitted to stay at the EWS, qualifying local families with children receive shelter in a local motel through the SCCDC's voucher program. For additional information or to make a donation to the EWS, please visit us online at www.santaclaritashelter.com. # # # # MEDIA CONTACT: |
